Short habits that keep a puzzle solvable on turn five instead of lucky on turn two.
Open for coverage, not for flair
A good first word tests common consonants and a spread of vowels. The goal is to color the keyboard, not to look clever. Save rare letters until the board has actually asked for them.
Treat yellows as constraints
A yellow letter is not “somewhere else, maybe.” It is “not here, still in the word.” Lock that into the next guess. Repeating a gray letter is the most expensive habit in the game.
When to hunt vs. when to solve
If three or more plausible words remain, spend a turn discriminating them. If only two remain and they share a pattern, pick one — you have enough information. Hints on this site follow the same idea: open the next clue only when the board is no longer teaching you.
